Real tree removals, trimmings, and hazard work from Madison and the surrounding Dane County area.

80-Foot Cottonwood Over a Garage — 4 Inches of Clearance

THE SITUATION

One of our tree trimming jobs in Madison, WI — a homeowner on Winnebago Street in Atwood had an 80-foot cottonwood that had developed a significant lean toward their detached garage over a winter. The root plate on the uphill side had begun to lift — visible soil cracking six feet from the base. The garage sat four inches inside the tree’s fall radius.

WHAT WE DID

For this tree trimming Madison, WI challenge, straight felling wasn’t possible — the lean and garage made it a rigging job. We used a two-rope rigging system to section the tree from the top down, lowering each piece to a designated drop zone on the opposite side of the yard from the garage. The trunk was walked out in sections using a redirect and ground crew coordination.

OUTCOME

Full removal in one day. Garage untouched. Stump ground to 10 inches below grade. Customer’s homeowner’s policy covered the majority of the cost after we provided documentation of the root plate failure. This is what tree trimming in Madison, W, done right looks like.

Lightning-Struck Oak in Middleton — Split Crown, No Side Yard Access

THE SITUATION

A homeowner on Pleasant View Road in Middleton called us the morning after a direct lightning strike split their 60-foot bur oak. The crown was resting at a 30-degree lean over the driveway and a neighbor’s attached garage. No side yard access ruled out a bucket truck — the only approach was from the street.

WHAT WE DID

We rigged the split crown in sections using rope and block systems anchored to the standing stem. Each piece was lowered by hand to a ground crew in the driveway. The remaining stem was felled in a controlled drop onto the lawn — well clear of both structures.

OUTCOME

Driveway and neighbor’s garage untouched. Stump ground flush the same afternoon. Debris hauled off before noon. The homeowner had a contractor pour a new patio slab where the stump stood within the week.

Nine EAB-Killed Ash Trees in Fitchburg — Removed Before Any Could Fall

THE SITUATION

A Fitchburg homeowner had nine mature ash trees confirmed dead from Emerald Ash Borer. Several had already dropped large limbs over the winter. Two trees leaned toward a neighboring wood fence; a third overhung a detached garage. The homeowner wanted all nine removed before summer storms could bring them down on their own.

WHAT WE DID

Staged the removals by risk level — dead trees first, each sectioned from the top because brittle EAB-killed ash is unpredictable when felled. Followed Wisconsin DNR firewood movement restrictions on all wood. Chipped all brush on-site, hauled trunk sections. Stump ground all nine stumps in the same visit. Crew of six, full equipment — we planned the logistics for a single-day completion.

OUTCOME

All nine trees removed and stumps ground in 9.5 hours. Backyard cleared, seeded with topsoil. Customer saved 15% by bundling the nine-tree job — and avoided the higher cost of emergency removal if one of the dead trees had failed over winter.

Madison’s Tree People — We’ve Been Here Since 2009

My name is Jason Kowalski. I’m an ISA-certified arborist, and I started Tree Trimming WI Madison out of a pickup truck and a 20-inch chainsaw fifteen years ago. Today we’re a crew of eight — every one of them trained, insured, and someone I’d trust in my own backyard. We’re not a franchise; we’re not a national call center routing work to whoever shows up. We’re from Madison. We live in the neighborhoods we work in — Middleton, Atwood, the near east side. When you call us, you get us.

We’ve removed Emerald Ash Borer casualties from yards in Fitchburg, pruned century-old oaks along Nakoma Road, and cleared storm damage the morning after every major derecho to hit Dane County in the last decade. That local history matters — it means we know your soil type, your tree species, your neighborhood’s ordinances, and what your trees have been through.

How We Work — No Surprises, Start to Finish

Free On-Site Assessment

We come to your Madison-area property, look at the actual tree — not a photo you emailed us — and talk through what we see. We assess the lean, the root zone, proximity to your home, and any disease or structural issues. No charge, no obligation.

Written Quote — Itemized & Clear

You get a written quote that breaks down exactly what we’re doing and what it costs. We explain any permit requirements (for City of Madison street trees), timing considerations (we never prune oaks April–July), and what happens with debris. You decide — zero pressure.

Safe, Expert Execution

Our crew arrives on time, sets up protective measures for your lawn and landscaping, and gets to work. Every cut follows ANSI A300 standards. Our lead climber is on every job — not a subcontractor. We show proof of insurance before the first chainsaw starts.

Full Cleanup & Final Walkthrough

When the work is done, we rake, blow, and haul every piece of debris. Then we walk the job with you before we leave. If anything isn’t exactly right, we fix it on the spot. Your yard should look better than we found it — and it will.

Tree Trimming Cost in Madison, WI

Every tree is different. We provide free, no-obligation written estimates so you know exactly what to expect before any work begins.

What Affects the Price?

  • Tree size and height — Taller trees require more equipment and time
  • Number of branches — Dense canopies take longer to trim safely
  • Tree condition — Dead, diseased, or storm-damaged trees require extra care
  • Access — Trees near structures, power lines, or fences affect how we work
  • Work required — Light pruning vs. heavy crown reduction differ in scope
  • Debris removal — Hauling away brush and logs is included in our quotes
  • Emergency vs. scheduled — Planned work is typically more affordable than emergency calls
  • Number of trees — Multi-tree jobs often offer better value per tree

The best way to get an accurate price is to schedule a free on-site estimate. We’ll walk your property, assess each tree, and give you a clear written quote with no surprises.

More Tree Trimming Questions

When is the best time to trim trees in Wisconsin?

Late winter (February–March) is ideal for most trees in Madison. Trimming while trees are dormant reduces stress, minimizes sap loss, and limits exposure to insects and disease. Summer trimming is fine for light shaping and deadwood removal. Avoid heavy pruning in fall when wounds heal more slowly.

What is the difference between tree trimming and tree pruning?

Trimming typically refers to cutting back overgrown branches for appearance and clearance — keeping your tree tidy and away from structures. Pruning is more targeted: removing dead, diseased, or structurally weak branches to improve the tree’s long-term health and safety. Most jobs involve a combination of both.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Madison?

The City of Madison requires permits for removing certain trees on public terraces (the strip between the sidewalk and street). Trees on private property generally do not require a city permit, but some neighborhoods and HOAs have additional rules. We can advise you based on your specific situation during your free estimate.

What is oak wilt and how do you prevent it?

Oak wilt is a serious fungal disease that spreads through root systems and sap-feeding beetles, and it can kill an oak tree within a single season. In Wisconsin, the highest risk period is April through July. To minimize risk, we avoid pruning oaks during this window whenever possible. If pruning is necessary in spring or summer, we apply wound sealant immediately. Our ISA Certified Arborists follow current best practices for oak wilt prevention.

How can I tell if a tree is dead or just dormant?

In winter it can be hard to tell. A quick test: snap a small twig — if it bends without breaking and shows green beneath the bark, the tree is likely alive. Brittle twigs with dry, brown interiors suggest decline. Other signs of a dying tree include extensive dead branches, bark that falls off easily, fungal growth at the base, or no leaf growth in spring when surrounding trees have leafed out. If you’re unsure, an arborist can assess the tree for you.
